Gardiner-John Wesley Gammon, son of Fernly and Thelma Gammon, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving and caring family on December 11th, 2017. Born on April 19th, 1948, John attended Gardiner Area High School, lettering in field and track, as well as basketball.
After graduating in 1967, he enlisted in the Army serving our country in Vietnam from 1967 to 1970. During his time in the Army, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. John was honorably discharged from active duty in 1970 and served in the reserves until 1973.
While in the reserves, he began working for the State of Maine Department of Transportation. While working for the DOT, John was responsible for supplying crews with material necessary to repair and paint roads. He retired in 2009 with 39 years of service. After retirement, John worked part time for C.B. Mattsons during the summer and fall seasons. He helped maintain lawns and landscaping, loving the time he had with Chuck Smith and his son, Mike. During this time, John was also an active member of the Gardiner Nazarene Church where he served on the board, and assisted in maintaining the church.
John is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Marie Gammon; his daughter Lisa Thibodeau and husband Phil of Chelsea; son Michael Gammon and wife Suzanne of Randolph; daughter Jennifer Mulholland and husband Cecil of Barrington, New Hampshire; six beautiful grandchildren Brooke, Isaac, Jackson, Zoe, Dylan, and Owen; his sister Maxine Hall of Tucson, Arizona and son Brandon and family; niece Debbie Burns of Cape Neddick and family; niece Jackie Carpentier of Auburn and family; cousin Ernest Gammon of Hallowell; his best friend from high school, Steve Lavallee of West Gardiner; and numerous friends that were impacted by his strong set of values.
He is predeceased by his mother and father, Fernly and Thelma Gammon, and brother, Eugene Gammon.
John was a compassionate and generous man with a sense of humor and love for music. He valued the simple things in life, finding the good in everyone who crossed his path. He built strong and loving relationships with family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, and integrity. He enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in Pemaquid, Maine, especially during Fourth of July celebrations and annual croquet tournaments. John could often be seen on the sidelines at his grandson's soccer and baseball games, or in the bleachers at a basketball game. He loved watching Isaac follow in the footsteps of his father, and John's son, Mike. He looked forward to the often chaotic and misguided family trips around Maine and New England in the "Griswold" minivan, or the trips to Florida, Arizona, Mexico, and Jamaica, where we explored Disney, met up with his extended family from Columbia and Mexico, and survived hurricane Charlie. For John, it was never about the destination, but the time he spent with loved ones along the way and the memories that were made. In the words of James Taylor, and one of John's favorite musical artists, "Shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel…"
