In April 1780, his father Benjamin and Fourteen family members were captured and taken through the wilderness to Niagra for a month. Many publications speak to this story. John Gilbert may have been a captive during the ordeal, as noted above, but his name was not included in the narrative by William Walton: The Captivity of Benjamin Gilbert and His Family, 1780-83. In retrospect, John suffered much from the trauma to his family and the loss of his father in August, 1780. John served as administrators to his late father's estate, as he was the oldest son.

John died at 59 years of age. He doesn't appear to have sourced MM records that indicate a burial at Bradford Friends, there was once a memorial and has been deleted.

His will filed, In Pennsylvania, Wills and Probate Records, 1683-1993.

Probate Date 2 Apr 1803, Chester, Pennsylvania, Item Description Will Books K-M, Vol 10-12, 1797-1817. Page 402;
