Henry Melvin - Henry Vern Melvin, 94, Hopkins, died Saturday, Feb. 18 at his home after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. Marc Hibbard and Carl Cummings officiating the services. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p. m. tonight at the Swanson-Price Funeral Home, Hopkins. Burial will be at the Hopkins Cemetery.
The body will lie in state after 4 p. m. tonight at the Swanson-Price Funeral Home and from 1 to 2 p. m. on Tuesday at the church.
Masonic services will be held at the church and military services will be held at the graveside.
The son of James E. and Mary M. (Lindley) Melvin was born April 10, 1894 in Siam, Iowa.
On April 5, 1919 he marred his first wife Emma Dorothea Gunther in Lincoln, Neb. He married his second wife, Gladys Keats Davis on Dec. 15, 1945 in Hiawatha, Kan.
He was a graduate of the Siam, Iowa Public School. He was also a retired farmer, a substitute mail carrier and a truck driver.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in World War I.
Mr. Melvin was a member of the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, he was a charter member of the Hopkins Lion Club, the Siam, Iowa Masonic Lodge, the Glen Ulmer Post American Legion, Hopkins and the 60 plus Club, Hopkins.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Emma Melvin, 1944; his second wife, Gladys Melvin, 1984; a son, Carl LaVerne, World War II; two step daughters and two grandsons,.
Mr. Melvin is survived by three daughters, Dorothea Abbott, Hollister, Calif, Ruth Brown, Kansas City, and Kathryn Gray, Kansas City; 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; a stepson, Donald Davis, Braymer; five step grandchildren; a half-sister, Susie Dillion, Blockton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
