Elizabeth Preuss was born January 22, 1818 in Monreal, Kreis Mayen, Rhineland, Germany, the daughter of George Bernhard Preuss and Margaret Elizabeth Kirscher, both natives of Germany. She married Anton Meiler on February 12, 1839, at St. Kastor Catholic Church, Weiler, Kreis Mayen, Germany. They had six children - Margaretha (1840-1878), Maria (1841-1910), George Bernhard (1842-1915), Damian (1844- 1844) Johann A. (1845-1914) and Joseph (1847- ?).
On December 24, 1855, the family, with eight children including the four surviving from Anton's marriage to Margaretha Frenzen, having sailed on the Bark New York, arrived from Bremen, Germany, at the Port of New York to be processed into the recently opened Castle Garden, America's first official immigration center.
The family settled in Johnsburg, McHenry County Illinois, where Anton was a school teacher and active member of St. John's Catholic Church
Sometime after her husband died in 1872, she lived with the family of her daughter, Margaretha and her husband, Michael Conrad. Elizabeth lived with the Conrads until her death on February 5, 1904.
