Mr. Neely was born on July 24, 1925, the son of Will & Della Neely, in Moodys Crossroads in St. Clair County. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard in 1943 and was stationed aboard the LST 794 in the Pacific during WWII. While in the Coast Guard, he was involved in Marianas, the Invasion of the Phillipines, and Saipan. His ship earned the Battle Star at Okinawa. Mr. Neely also attended the University of Alabama and was awarded a Law degree from the Birmingham School of Law, and was a supervisor with State Farm for 35 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Scottsboro Funeral Home with Dr. Steve Screws officiating. Burial will follow in Pinehaven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the funeral home.
Mr. Neely is survived by his sons, John F. (Rita) Neely, Jr., Dr. Richard B. (Christie) Neely; grandson, Alan (Allie) Neely; great-grandson, Alexander Thomas Neely; nieces, Mary Neely Clayton, Marion Painter; brother-in-law, John (Jan) Brown; and a host of cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Neely; siblings, Virginia, Margaret, Mary Sue, Will Mac; and his parents, Will and Della Neely.
