Hiram married Lydia and together they had Albert, Lucy, Alva, Mary, Elizabeth, Rosetta, and Emma. Lydia died May 1863 and in February 1864, Hiram joined the Union Army. Hiram's son Alva looked after the younger children while he was away.
Hiram enlisted in the Fiftieth NY Engineers at Lisle and mustered in as a private in Company A. Mustered out with the company June 13, 1865 at Fort Barry, Va.
After his return he married Susannah and farmed for a time in Berkshire. In 1880, the family moved to Candor. Hiram and Sussanah had at least four children together: Hattie, Alfred, Jennie, and Jesse. In 1890 he is listed in the veteran's schedule for Richford, Ny.
