FREDERICKSBURG - Jerome Hubalek, of Taylor, Texas, passed away peacefully on the evening of Sunday, November 26, 2017, at the age of 96. Jerome was born to Emil and Caroline Hubalek on March 8, 1921 in rural Victoria County, Texas. He grew up in Ganado, Texas, graduated from Ganado High School and from Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M - Kingsville) with a degree in biology. Jerome went on to obtain a Master's Degree in Education Administration. He was a proud member of 'the greatest generation', having served his country as a Lieutenant JG and Communications Officer in the United States Navy during World War II. His service aboard the USS Maumee and the USS Allegash took him to many destinations, including Bermuda, Trinidad, and Great Britain. Jerome continued to serve in the Naval Reserves post-war, until his honorable discharge in 1954.

Jerome was united in marriage with Joy Albrecht of Eagle Lake, Texas on July 13, 1957. They had two children, Jan and Jon. Jerome's career was in education, teaching and coaching multiple sports (male and female) at small schools in LaWard, Lolita, and Ganado. He concluded his career in Alvin, where he taught Junior High math and then was named principal of Alvin Elementary School in 1968. He served in that capacity until his retirement. Jerome and Joy moved from Alvin to Fredericksburg in 1992, having fallen in love with the Hill Country on numerous vacation trips. They were active members of the United Methodist Church in both Alvin and Fredericksburg, and of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. Jerome stayed busy in his retirement - tending his large vegetable and native plan gardens, volunteering with the Hill Country Hospice Thrift Shop, and taking road trips with Joy. He was an avid reader, particularly of Texas history and Western novels, and also enjoyed golfing and wade-fishing in the Gulf. Jerome was a die-hard Houston Astros fan since the team's beginning, and was so happy to see them win their first World Series title. He was an expert Rummikub player and usually the winner, right up until 2 weeks before his death.

Jerome and Joy moved to SPJST Senior Living in Taylor, Texas in 2013. They both experienced major health challenges, and Joy passed away on March 2, 2014. Jerome bravely carried on but sorely missed his love and companion of almost 57 years.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 30 at 10:30 AM at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. Graveside service will be held on Friday, December 1 at 1:00 PM at Ganado City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Good Samaritan Center of Fredericksburg, Hill Country Memorial Hospital Hospice, or Fredericksburg United Methodist Church.
