Bonnie's mother, Irene, died from childbirth when she was three days old. Oscar, her father, took the infant by horseback, to his sister, Martha Lucinda "Maw Lucy" Hunt Cooper, wife of George Henry Cooper. "Maw Lucy" as Bonnie called her, had just had a child named Donnie Tee. Maw Lucy took the infant child, named her Bonnie Lee and raised the two young children as twins (they were born five days apart).
