Nicki was a senior majoring in biology at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois. She was walking across a street that cuts through the campus at 1:15AM when she she was struck by a vehicle in the 600 block of Annie Glidden Road. Nikki was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, where she was later pronounced dead. The police later located the driver, 22-year-old Maria Sarantopoulos, after receiving tips regarding her vehicle. Maria was a fellow NIU senior who was majoring in communication. Maria was indicted by a grand jury with reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident and drunken driving.

It is ironic to note that one hour before, another NIU student, 20-year-old Brian White, also died. Fellow student Louis Carfagnini had thrown a cinder block from the back of an off-campus building whereupon it struck Brian. Louis was later charged with involuntary manslaughter. After Nicole died, another student perished that evening in an off-campus car-related incident.
