Victim May Have Saved Boy, 9, Before Drowning

Dennis Starmer, 23, 4817 Holmes Street, drowned Saturday afternoon when he and two companions fell through thin ice over a flooded drainage ditch in Sarpy County.
But Sarpy County Sheriff's office said Starmer may have save the life of his 9 year brother-in-law before he died.

Starmer and brothers-in-law Robert Bennett, 19, 4829 Holmes Street and Darrel Bennett, 9, 3759 South 78th St, were walking toward a cabin on the Elkhorn River, south of Q Street when the thin ice gave way. Sarpy County Deputy Sheriff Mike Barrett said.
The older Bennett was able to climb out of the eight foot deep water and run for help Barrett said. As he returned to the scene with the only lifeline he could find - an electrical extension cord he saw Darrell lifted on the solid ice but Starmer disappeared, sherriff's officers said they were told.
The three fell through the ice about noon and Starmers body was recovered about seven hours later. Services for Starmer are pending at Crosby-Kunold Mortuary.
