Aberdeen Evening Express - Wednesday 11 June 1879, p 3:
Longevity at Ballater — The united ages of the three residenters of this parish who have died within the past month amount to 276 years — and in some points their histories are worth recording.
The first of the three was James Ross, Mill of Tullich, who had almost completed his 97th year, and had resided for 60 years at the mill. He was born in Tullich, and resided all his life in the parish with the exception of a few years he worked in the south a joiner. He married the age of 22, his wife being two years younger, and their married life extended over a period of 72 years, his wife having died about three years ago at the age of 92 years. He was an active, industrious man all his life, and retained his faculties to the last. It is only few years ago that he casually remarked to an acquaintance one morning—" I was at the tap o' Craigendarroch yesterday, and I hevna been that this seventy year afore," a remark which those who know Craigendarroch will have no difficulty in appreciating. He was communicant in the church of Tullich at the time when service was conducted alternately in the churches Tullich, Glengairn, and Glenmuick, and he was present at the laying of the foundation stone of the old Established Church, Ballater, which was built to take the place of the three.
