Raymond was the son of Bonafacio F. Appellido of Bakersfield California and he enlisted in the US Army. SP4 arrived for duty in Vietnam on March 9 1970 where he was assigned to Team 1-8, P Company, 75th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division, USARV.

ON September 20, SP Appellido was a passenger onboard a UH-1H helicopter enroute on a combat operation when it was hit by enemy ground fire. The aircraft crashed and burned 3 kilometers north of Hill 158 (Con Thien) killing all eleven men onboard.
