On 10/11/1862 he was mustered into Troop H, 6th Michigan Cavalry, which regiment served under the command of General George Armstrong Custer. He participated in the Battle of Gettysburg and was wounded on July 24, 1863, at Thornton's Gap, VA, when a bullet went through the small of his back and almost out the other side. He was taken to Lincoln General Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he died of wounds.
