Craig was born in Leadville, CO and lived there until the age of 5. His father worked in the business and finance office of the Climax Mine and his mother was a school teacher. His parents moved to Golden, CO so he could attend school there and his father commuted up to the mine weekly. Craig graduated from Golden High School in 1974, attended Colorado State University and graduated with a BS in Finance. He started working in a bank in downtown Denver and then became the financial analyst for Amex at the Henderson Mine. Later he worked for Arapahoe County in their finance department, retiring as a budget officer in 2005.

Craig was a life-long Boy Scout, beginning in Cub Scouts, was an Eagle Scout, Order of Arrow, and was awarded the Silver Beaver award. He fell in love with sailing and by the time he was 15 owned his first sailboat. He was an avid member of the Denver Sailing Association and Coronado 15 Fleet in Denver, CO and an active Sea Scout trainer and troop leader in the Denver Council of Boy Scouts.

He was an avid hiker, cross country skier and loved to winter camp. Craig met his wife Vicky while racing on Sloan's Lake and they continued to own sailboats and race until 2012. They were avid hikers, bikers and cross country skiers until a devastating illness overtook Craig's ability to continue those activities.

Craigs parents were: George William Pierce (1916-2002, buried at Ft. Logan), Edith Marie Roloff (1920-1979).
