Mary K Burke taught in the public schools of Montgomery, Alabama, for 30 years. Mary and cousins Dolly Kirk, Frances Nimmo Greene, and Nimmo's sister, Mary Greene, were among the original members of "The Tintagil Club" - a young ladies literary club founded in 1896 in Montgomery. In 1919 Mary K Burke was the first woman ever elected to the Montgomery City School Board. Two years later she became the first dean of women at the University of Alabama, serving as the dean 1921-1928. When she had to limit her activities due to health problems, she became the librarian at the University of Alabama Medical School, filling this role 1929-1945. The University of Alabama women's residence hall which opened in April, 1962, was named in her honor, "Mary Katherine Burke Hall."
