Dolly's early education was in New Orleans. She was valedictorian of the class of 1880 at Girls Central High School. She later attended Sophie Newcomb College in Chautauqua, NY, the University of Michigan, and Columbia University. She taught in the grammar schools of Montgomery, Alabama, beginning in 1894. Dolly and cousins Mary Burke and sisters Mary and Nimmo Greene, were among the original members of "The Tintagil Club" - a young ladies literary club founded in 1896 in Montgomery. As a member of the Tintagil Club, Dolly won the 1903 annual prize of the Alabama State Federation of Womens Clubs with a Shakespearean paper, "Enobarbus." She also contributed poems and stories to newspapers and magazines. Dolly later became a member of the faculty at Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery and head of the English department in 1917. By 1929 she was on the faculty at the University of Alabama, and was the faculty member of Chi Delta Phi, National Honorary Literary Society, Delta Chapter. She was a member of the DAR. She co-authored one book with her cousin, Frances Nimmo Greene: WITH SPURS of GOLD: Heroes of Chivalry and Their Deeds; Boston; Little, Brown, & Co., 1905.
