John Russell Pope

Architect. He studied architecture at Columbia University, graduating in 1894. In 1895 he was the recipient of the McKim Travelling Fellowship and a fellowship to attend the American Academy in Rome. Using his travel fellowship, he travelled through Italy and Greece studying the buildings that would later influence his architectural style. Following his studies in Rome, he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He returned to the United States in 1900, working for three years for Bruce Price before setting out on his own. Over the course of his career he designed numerous public buildings, over one hundred homes, as well as churches, mausoleums and college masterplans. Among his designs are the Jefferson Memorial, the Temple of the Scottish Rite, the National Archives, Constitution Hall, the American Institute of Pharmacy Building and the west building of the National Gallery of Art, all in Washington DC; Union Station in Richmond, Virginia; the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland; the mausoleum of Henry Huntington in California; the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Memorial in Hodgenville, Kentucky; and additions to the Tate Gallery and the British Museum in London. He passed away due to cancer.
