Daniel J LeHand was born ca 1855 in New York (possibly Potsdam) to Daniel Lehan and Hannah (Murphy) Lehan. He was the first born to the couple, and he had two siblings, including Patrick (b. ca 1857) and Donald (b. ca 1860).

Daniel married Mary Jane Graffin on ca 1870 in Brasher, New York, and the couple had five children, including Arthur H LeHand (b. Feb 1879), Daniel (Dan) James LeHand (b. Aug 16, 1880), Bernard John LeHand (b. Jul 31, 1883), Anna M LeHand (b. Jul 12, 1891), and Marguerite Alice (Missy) LeHand (b. Sep 13, 1896). All of the children were born in Potsdam, New York.

Of the five children, Margeurite (Missy) LeHand became the most famous as she worked for over twenty years personally as secretary to Franklin Delano Roosevelt when he was governor and when he was president.

Daniel died in February, 1924 in Somerville, Massachusetts of apoplexy, stroke. He is buried in the New Saint Mary's Cemetery in Potsdam, New York. His wife is also buried in the same area.
