John was born in Stainbrough, Yorkshire, the son of Thomas Bintliffe, a joiner, and his wife Hannah nee Alsop. He was baptised at Silkstone 14 December 1792.
John married Elizabeth Schofield at Darfield 20 February 1812. Children: Mary 1813, Rebecca 1815, Thomas 1818, Elizabeth 1821, William 1824, Joseph 1831, John 1835, Hannah 1837.
John worked as a wood sawyer for most of his life. He was widowed in 1859, and in 1861 he was living with his son William and family in Kimberworth. He died aged 72, and was buried 14 August 1864
