The now-lost 1890 Census would have been the census debut of this family. When we fast forward to the 1900 Census, the family is living in North Township in Marshall Co., Indiana. Charles Kaufman, aged 49, was farming as his father had before him. Jennie (aka Martha Jane), aged 33, reported that she had had seven children, but that only six had survived to that census. All six were there with their parents—Chloe, aged 15, Floyd, aged 12, Harvey, aged 7, Flossie, aged 5, Zula, aged 2, and Perma, aged 4 months.
The family was still living in North Township when the 1910 Census rolled around. Charles, aged 49, was busy farming. Martha, aged 42, reported that she had had eight children, seven of them still living. Lela, aged 3, had joined the family since the last census. She was there with her four older siblings—Harvey, aged 17, Flossie, aged 15, Zula, aged 12, and Loretta (aka Perma), aged 10.
Perma married Delmer W. Bowman on 13 Jan 1917. (From: The Bremen Enquirer, Bremen, IN – Thu 118 Jan 1917 pg. 5) “Delmer (sic) Bowman and Miss Perma L. Kaufman, of Linkville, were united in marriage at Plymouth Saturday by Rev. C.L. Enyeart at the Wesleyan Methodist parsonage.” The couple had two sons together—Darrell Keith (9 Aug 1922 – 1 Dec 1993) and Clayton LaMar (3 Dec 1925 – 18 Apr 2012).
I couldn’t find them on the 1920 Census.
On 8 Jul 1922, Perma lost her father Charles Kaufman, aged 61.
The 1930 Census placed them in North Township in Marshall Co., Indiana. Dellmer Bowman, aged 33, was working as a crater in a foundry. Loretta (aka Perma), aged 30, was home with their two young sons—Darrell, aged 7, and Clayton, aged 4.
I found two 1940 Census records for Dellmer Bowman. On one, Dellmer, aged 42, was listed as head of household, living in Plymouth, Marshall County, no work noted. Loretta, aged 40, was noted as a laborer in a creamery. Both sons were still at home—Darrell, aged 18, and Clayton, aged 14. On the other record, Dellmer Bowman, aged 42, appears as a patient at the Northern Indiana Hospital for the Insane in Logansport, Cass Co., Indiana, his 1935 residence noted as Plymouth.
Both of Perma and Dellmer’s sons served in the military.
Perma’s mother Martha died at age 84, passing into the light on 14 Mar 1952.
Perma and Dellmer were married for fifty-nine years. Perma died first on 21 Mar 1986 at age 85. Dellmer died five months later on 29 Aug 1986 at age 89.
