The Rev. Dr. Maynard Fountain was born on September 2, 1925 in Richmond, VA to Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Fountain, Sr. of Greenwood, MS. His early years were spent in Greenwood and after graduating from Greenwood High School, he graduated from Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern at Memphis) in 1947. While at Rhodes College, he served as President of the Student Body and President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was also a member of ODK honorary fraternity and in later years served on the Board of Trustees at Rhodes. Upon his graduation, he felt a calling to the Presbyterian Church USA ministry. He graduated from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA. Years later he earned a Doctorate of Divinity Degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL.

On February 9, 1951 he married Lilian Landrum Leavell of New Orleans, LA and they were blessed with three children, Dr. William Maynard Fountain, III (Cindy) of Lexington, KY; Dr. Beth Fountain of Montreat, NC; and Jan McRae of Montreat, NC. He also leaves behind five grandsons; William M. Fountain, IV (Jayme) of Circleville, OH; Heath B. Phillips of Atlanta, GA; Drew Fountain (Kelly) of Lexington, KY; 1st Lt. Robert F. McRae (Mariam) of Sneads Ferry, NC; and Wyatt E. McRae of Memphis, TN. He is also survived by one great granddaughter, Molly Caroline Fountain of Circleville, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lilian Leavell Fountain; sister, Janet Fountain McIntyre and his son-in-law, Robert E. McRae.

Dr. Fountain served as pastor of churches in North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana. While in Louisiana, he served as General Presbyter of the Presbytery of South Louisiana and as President of the Louisiana Interchurch Council. He concluded his ministry by serving as the first Director of Development at Montreat Conference Center. His retirement years were spent in Montreat and Givens Highland Farms in Black Mountain. His Family wishes to express appreciation to all of the staff at Highland Farms and Interim Healthcare.

A memorial service will be held at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church in Black Mountain on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 2:00 PM. The Revs. Mary Katherine Robinson and Keith Grogg will officiate.
