Olaf was the son of Ole Andrew Engebretson and Tobine Christophersdatter Allestad (Evje).

He had five siblings: Esther Lillian, Inez Constance, Alice Crystal, Judith Theadora, and Ernest Emanuel.

Olaf married Gerda Johanna Thompson on June 8, 1946.

They were the parents of three children: Darrell Arnold, David Olaf, and Mary Kae.

Olaf A. Engebretson, age 74, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening, January 30 at his rural Clearbrook farm home. Olaf was born July 28, 1916 in Clearbrook to parents Ole and Tobine Engebretson. He attended the Rydeen School, rural Clearbrook. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First Lutheran Church in Clearbrook. His marriage to Gerda Thompson took place in Clearbrook on June 8, 1946. He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church and had served as treasurer for several years. He has served as a church trustee at First Lutheran Church, a 4-H leader, a director on the Clearwater Polk REA Board, ASCS Board member and 30 years as treasurer of Leon Township.
He is survived by his wife, Gerda of Clearbrook; daughter; Mary, Mrs. Larry, Swenson of Park River, North Dakota; two sons, Darrell and wife Nancy of Leonard, David and wife Judi of Clearbrook; eight grandchildren, David, Aaron and Daniel Swenson of Park River, North Dakota, Deidre, Olaf and Karly Engebretson of Leonard, Shawn and Jenny Groshong of Clearbrook; two sisters, Inez Lewis and Alice Bierbaum of Clearbrook; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Olaf was preceded in death by: his parents; one brother, Ernest; and two sisters, Esther and Judy.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 2, at the Elim Lutheran Brethren Church in Clearbrook with the Rev. Herman Engebretson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of the Cease Funeral Home of Bagley. Casket bearers were Dennis Engebretson, Mark Larson, David Lewis, Steve Thompson, Bob Sandland, Dale Halvorson, Don Bierbaum and Karroll Walberg.
