Francis Parker Champion, M.D., 84, died Friday, June 18, 2010.

Born September 4, 1925, in Greer, SC, son of the late Burley Edgar and Corrie Cannon Champion.

After graduating from Greer High School in 1942, he honorably served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Europe during World War II from 1943 to 1946.

Attended the Citadel and Wofford College. After graduating from Wofford College in 1950 with a Bachelors degree in science, he taught biology and chemistry at Greer High School for two years. In 1956 he received an M.D. degree from Medical University of South Carolina.

Upon graduating from MUSC, he interned at Spartanburg General Hospital and began a family practice in Spartanburg, SC, on January 1, 1957. He was honored to have provided medical care to many, many wonderful people in the Spartanburg community and he deeply appreciated their faith, trust, and friendship.

Dr. Champion was board certified by the American Academy of Family Practice. He served as president of the Spartanburg County Heart Association and secretary of Spartanburg General Hospital staff and was a member of the Board of Family Care Council. He also served as chairman of Spartanburg District Seven School Board. He remained an avid sports fan, particularly of Wofford College and Spartanburg High School, and served as the team physician for Spartanburg High School for many years. He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Spartanburg where he served on several boards.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Grubbs Champion; daughter, Elizabeth Heath "Betsy" Champion Powell (Elliott) of Columbia; son, Francis Parker Champion, Jr. (Tory) of Spartanburg; two granddaughters, Lindsay Elizabeth Champion and Charlotte Heath Champion, both of Spartanburg; three grandsons, John Key Powell, II, Parker Champion Powell, and Austin Elliott Powell, all of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by three sisters, Elizabeth Reece, Catherine Abraham, and Nina Godfrey; and one brother, Edgar Champion.

Funeral service was held Monday, June 21, 2010, at 11:00 AM in Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Charles A. Graves, Rev. David Nichols and Rev. David Smith.

The family received friends after the service in Bethel Fellowship Hall. A private burial followed.

Those serving as pallbearers include Tim Calvert, Al Clark, Dr. Scott Coley, Doc Davis, David Johnson, Stewart Johnson, Jr., Doug Lowe, and Doug Whitaker.

Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. Jay Bearden, Stewart Johnson, Sr., Ned Johnson, George Dean Johnson, Jr., Jimmy Gordon, Stewart Elliott, Bill Carr, Dean Lee, Dr. John Patterson, Bill Lynch, Dr. Wally Harper, Dr. Robert Taylor, and H.F. Chreitzberg Sunday School Class.

Memorials could be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306-3489; Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or to the charity of one’s choice.
