Donald Leroy Hiatt, age 68, of Moravia, Iowa, passed away Monday, October 30, 2017 at the Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa, Iowa after a valiant battle with cancer.

Donald was born on Number 1, 1948 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Flora (Beagle) Hiatt. He graduated from Moravia High School with the Class of 1966.

After high school, he went to work for Collins in Cedar Rapids, until he was drafted into the United States Army on June 5, 1968. He proudly served in the Vietnam War, receiving numerous medals; including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, Sharpshooter (M-16 Rifle) Expert (M-14 Rifle), and two overseas bars, as well as earning the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged on March 5, 1970.

After his military service, he returned to the workforce. He worked as a mechanic with Union Carbide in Centerville from 1971-1983. Donald realized that his real passion was farming. He started farming while he was working at the factory. He was a farmer for most of his adult life. After he retired from Union Carbide, he continued to farm until the present time. He also had a passion for Allis Chalmers Tractors.

Donald was very active in the Moravia VFW for many years. He assumed the position of the Commander with the VFW. He was also a member of the Unionville American Legion, Unionville, Iowa. He was very community-oriented. He never asked for anything from anyone, but was always helpful to those in need. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Moreover, Donald loved his family with all of his heart.

Donald is survived by his daughter, Donita (Chad) Leffler of Eddyville; his grandchildren, Trevor Leffler of Eddyville, and Taylor Leffler of Eddyville; a brother, John (Linda) Hiatt of Albia; as well as numerous friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Flora Hiatt; and a brother, Lee Hiatt.

Funeral services will be held at 10AM, Friday, November 3, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia with Pastor Dennis Doud officiating. Interment will follow the service at Denny Cemetery, south of Moravia with military rites conducted by the Unionville American Legion Post #407. A visitation will take place from 5-7PM, Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia. Memorials have been established to the Denny Cemetery, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
