Kathryn “Kay” Phillips, age 92, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon. She was born on March 24, 1925, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the daughter of Harold E. and Stella B. (Cox) Bell.
After her graduation from Mount Vernon High School in 1943, she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and received an Associate of Arts degree in Applied Fashion and Interior Design. She joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in August 1945, and received her basic training at Hunters College in New York as a Hospital Apprentice. While at Basic Training, she was a member of the WAVES Singing Platoon. Kay as stationed at the Santa Margarita Ranch Naval Hospital, Oceanside California, where she proudly served as a Pharmacist Mate. It was there she met a patient who would become her life partner, George William “Bill” Phillips of San Francisco, California.
Kay was a 20-year member of the Dogwood Blossom Chapter of Sweet Adelines, and was honored to be named Sweet Adeline “New Member of the Year” in 1988. It was during her tenure with Sweet Adelines that she began a new friendship with two best friends, Ruth Schooler of Utica, and Bunny Byrd of Mount Vernon. She was also a longtime member of the Child Conversation League of Mount Vernon. Kay was an accomplished seamstress, making many Sweet Adeline costumes.
Kay was employed with “Greeters” and loved meeting new families in the Mount Vernon area. She enjoyed the few years she spent managing the Fabric Department at Ringwalt’s Department Store. She loved quilting, making numerous items for her family to cherish. In 2001, she began a new tradition for her female family members with an annual Craft Weekend, the first weekend in November. This year is no exception as Craft Weekend will take place this coming weekend and will conclude with her Celebration of Life Service this coming Sunday afternoon. Pay Kay a visit and she would be ready with a pot of tea. She enjoyed playing cards and Dominos with family.
She is survived by her children, Linda Jonsson of Marion; Mark (Marsha) Phillips of Mount Vernon; Matt (Kim) Phillips of Bellville; Stacy (Jack) Coons of Mount Vernon; her 10 grandchildren, Shawn Phillips of Mount Vernon; Steven (Brande)Phillips of Carroll; Michael (Corbin) Phillips of Atlanta, Georgia; Christine (Mike) Hulme of Piqua; Patrick (Laura) Jonsson of Howard; Marty (Jessica) Sobolski, Norman, Oklahoma; Shanda (Dan) Fraleigh of Jacksonville, Arkansas; Stephanie Coons of Grimes, Iowa; Angela Coons of Mount Vernon; and Jeff Coons of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Kay was blessed with 10 great grandchildren, one great great grandson, and one more due in April 2017. She is also survived by special companion of recent years, Dorcus Frasher of Brookdale Senior Living Center of Mount Vernon.
Besides her parents, Kay was preceded in death by her husband “Bill” Phillips; a brother, Bernard Bell of Clearwater, Florida; and one of her special friends, Ruth Schooler.
A Celebration of Life with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2017 beginning at 3 pm at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050. Friends may call from 1pm until the time of service. Private burial will be held at the Mound View Cemetery.
