Folk Figure. A Creole slave, he was a leader in the Christmas Rebellion, which began on December 25, 1831, at the Kensington Estate in Jamaica. It was caused by the mistaken belief that the emancipation of the slaves was already granted by the British Parliament. The rebellion was put down within two weeks and most of the ringleaders, including Sharpe, were hanged. The rebellion succeeded in strenghtening the cause for the abolition of slavery across all British colonies, in 1833. He is now considered a National Hero in Jamaica.
