Lieutenant Colonel Shelby England was a passenger en route to leave in Australia when the plane crashed near Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea, near the village of Malklsing. He had been awarded the Presidential Citation, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross during his military career.

He had served in the South Pacific during World War II, serving as commanding officer of the 67th Fighter Squadron of the 374th Fighter Group.

He was the son of Shelby England and Leta Young England.
