Judy Bartz left this earth on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, after a short illness. On May 26, 1943, Judy was born in Marinette, Wis., the daughter of Helen (Lieburn) DeLorme and PFC Harry E DeLorme.
At the time, her father Harry was stationed at Camp Davis, N.C., but with the help of Dr. Zeratsky, he received a weekend pass and a train ticket to travel home to be with his wife and new daughter. After a brief four-hour visit on May 27, Harry boarded the train back to Camp Davis, only to have his life taken two months later.
Between the Lieburn Family and the DeLorme Family, Judy was treated as royalty.
In August of 1945, Judy’s mother Helen married Alvin Reiter and the family moved to Honolulu, where Alvin was stationed during the war. In 1947, the family moved back to Marinette, where Judy spent the majority of her life.
In her youth, Judy was active in both school and church. She cherished the friendships made during these years, and was able to maintain those friendships even when “life gets in the way.”
In 1961, she graduated from Marinette High School and, although her parents were hoping for her to pursue a career in nursing, she decided to become a beautician. Anyone who has known Judy could tell you, she was passionate about her craft, and would have excelled in any career path.
In 1962, Judy welcomed two children into her life, Julie and Jerry. Julie was born in January, and Jerry in December.
Whether it was sitting in vacant stylist’s chairs while Judy was working, or running up and down in the pews while she prepared to play the organ at church, Judy, Julie and Jerry were always together.
In November of 1972, Judy married Harold Derusha in Menominee, MI. It was during this time that Judy’s passion for cooking and entertaining became well known in the community. She could pull together a gourmet meal for 20 with a half day’s notice.
Judy and Harold spent 13 years together living on their boat the “Melodie III” during the summer, and at the “Schooner” the rest of the year. Harold passed in October of 1985.
On December 31, 1989, Judy married Roger “Wylie” Bartz at the First Presbyterian Church in Menominee.
With her marriage to Wylie, Judy’s extended family immediately expanded with three wonderful boys, Greg, Andy and David, whom she adored.
After spending a few years in San Diego, Judy and Wylie moved back to the Marinette area so they could be closer to their family as it continued to grow. Once back in the area, Judy was involved in many charitable groups including the BAMC Auxiliary and the animal shelter. Recently, Judy’s passion has shifted to being a devoted grandma, spending as much time as possible with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was always a standing invitation of the youngest grandkids to spend New Year’s Eve with Judy and Wylie, ringing in the New Year with all the fanfare of being at Times Square. She was the type that would not let you out of the door without a hug. Although our hearts are heavy, our memories of Judy will forever warm our souls.
