The daughter of Martin and Gertrude (Eichhorn) McNamara and a fifth generation Washingtonian, Mrs. Tierney was born in Washington, DC and grew up on Park Road, N.W. For her entire life of 97 years, she lived within 10 miles of her birthplace, attending Sacred Heart grade school and high school. During the 1930's and 1940's, she worked as a Congressional staffer on Capitol Hill, and in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was at the F.B.I. she met her future husband, special agent, Paul J. Tierney. Mr. Tierney was later appointed by President Kennedy to the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Ann and Paul Tiernay were married on May 14, 1949 in Washington, D.C. and were the parents of Michael, Brian, Timothy, Peter and Mary.

For the last 11 years of her life, Mrs. Tierney lived in Maplewood Park Place in Bethesda, where she was loved by staff and fellow resident alike.

She was a member of the Washington Club and Congressional Country Club.

Mrs. Tierney was survived by her sister, Mary Eileen McNamara of the Carmelite Sisters in Towson MD; and four children, Michael in Greenwich CT, Brian in Menlo Park CA, Tim in Wenham MA and Mary in Chevy Chase MD. Mrs. Tierney is also survived by 13 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; many loving nieces and nephews.
