Paul Tierney began his career as an FBI agent, then he joined the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation as an assistant counsel to Robert F. Kennedy. In 1963 he was appointed to the Interstate Commerce Commission and was chairman from 1967 to 1968. He was vice president of the Transportation Association in 1970 and also was counsel to the law firm Seyfarth Shaw Fairweather and Geraldson. He retired in 1980.
He was a graduate of Georgetown University and its law school.
