D.L. BEARD IS SUMMONED

Was Prominent Attorney In Napa and
Active In Civic Affairs

D.L. Beard, prominent attorney in Napa county for many years and member of a pioneer Napa family, passed away at his home near that city last Saturday morning at 4:45 o'clock. His death came as a great shock not only to his many friends and associates in Napa where he had spent his entire life, but throughout the county.

While Mr. Beard had been in poor health for a year or more, he had seemed somewhat improved and was able to be at his office a few hours each day and attend a trial in court recently. However, he suffered a severe setback last week and failed rapidly until the end.

Deceased was born in Napa, the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Beard, and was 65 years of age. He attended the old Oak Mound School as a boy and then completed his education at the University of California.

At the conclusion of his college days he entered the old mercantile firm of Thompson & Beard and later took part in the organization of Thompson, Beard & Sons, which still later became Winship-Beard Co. For many years Mr. Beard was in charge of the dry goods department of the big department store.

Later he retired from general merchandising and became identified with various other enterprises. He engaged in the manufacturing business with Cameron & Co., and also was associated for a time with a company interested in transportation on the Napa river. He was president of the Napa Valley Electric Co., at St. Helena until 1926.

Some twenty-two years ago he began the study of law. He was admitted to the bar and entered upon the practice of the legal profession, maintaining offices in San Francisco end Napa up to the time of his last illness.

Mr. Beard was active in civic matters and was a charter member of the Napa Rotary Club and attended its meetings until ill health did not permit him to do so. He was a very able man and was well known throughout the county.

Deceased was married in 1894 to Miss Bertha Behlow, who with one daughter and two sons, Mrs. Walter Brooke, of Manila, P.I., Darrel E. Beard, of Portland, Oregon, and Arthur E. Beard, of San Francisco, survive. He also leaves three grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Minnie Raymond, of Napa. Deceased was the uncle of James E. Beard, formerly of St. Helena.

Funeral services were held in Oakland.
