Professional Football Player. Born Gary Richard Lowe, he played the defensive back position for both the National Football League's Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions during a nine year career (1956-1964). He played football collegiately at Michigan State University where he was a part of two Rose Bowl-winning teams. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the fifth round of the 1956 NFL Draft. He went on to play the 1956 season and part of the 1957 season with the Redskins before being waived by them. He was picked up by the Detroit Lions and was a part of their 1957 NFL Championship-winning team. He would go on to play for the Lions for the next seven seasons before a trade to the Minnesota Vikings and an Achillies tendon injury ended his career in 1965. While with the Lions in the early 1960s, he, along with future Hall of Famers Dick "Night Train" Lane, Yale Lary, and Dick LeBeau, were part of the "The Four L's" defensive backfield. After retiring, he worked in the industrial equipment field. He was later honored by being inducted into both the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and his hometown Trenton (MI) Sports Hall of Fame. He passed away after a battle with Parkinson's Disease.
