Msgt. Vernon R. Harris, Sr., 87, of Pink, Oklahoma passed away Thursday, October 05, 2017 in Shawnee.

Vernon was born December 28, 1929 in Sayre, Oklahoma to Fred and Etta “Naomi” (Tadlock) Harris in Sayre, Oklahoma. He is the last survivor of ten children.

Vernon grew up in Sayre and attended Sayre Public Schools until the 8th grade. He lied about his age to join the military. During his time in the military he earned his GED in 1948 and in 1953 earned his Associate’s Degree.

He proudly served his country for 25 years first serving in the Army Air Corp and retiring from the U.S. Air Force. During his military career he served in Waco, TX, Fairbanks, Alaska, Grandview, Missouri, Oregon, Iceland, Greenland and Denison, TX. Following retirement from the military in 1971 he moved to the Pink area where he has since lived.

On June 10, 1951 he married Betty Fetty in Foss, Oklahoma and she preceded him in death April 30, 2005.

Vernon worked as an elevator mechanic at the University of Oklahoma.

He was a member of the Tecumseh American Legion/Hill-Huett Post 260 and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Vernon helped create the Pink Senior Citizen Center and was a former Trustee serving on the Board and was a former Town Councilman to the City of Pink.

Vernon enjoyed OU and OSU football, watching westerns, raising Herford Cattle and loved his border collies.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Harris; his parents, Fred and Naomi Harris; 5 sisters, Irene Swanson, Alice Little, Helen Scheberle, Blanch Musick and Alene Harris; and 4 brothers, Fred Harris, Bennie Harris, Richard Harris and David Harris.

Vernon is survived by 2 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Vernon Jr. and Judy Harris of Pink, OK and Ron and June Harris of Middleburg, FL; 5 grandchildren, Betty Harvey Gill of Middleburg, FL, Brenda Harris of Middleburg, FL, Amanda Harris of Pink, OK, Nicklas Harris of Middleburg, FL and Julie Harris of Dennison, TX; numerous great-grandchildren; loving friends and extended family.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 10, 2017 and from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 11, 2017.

Family gathering to greet friends and family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Cooper Funeral Home.

Graveside Service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 11, 2017 with U.S. Air Force Military Chaplain officiating at Brown Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
