William "Bill" Arthur Bailey
December 16, 1938 - October 05, 2017

William Arthur “Bill” Bailey died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on October 5, 2017. Bill was 78 years young, riding his bike, building, traveling, and fishing just a few weeks before his diagnosis of and death from glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. He took his recent diagnosis with courage and humor, buoyed by his faith in the Lord and his love for his family. His only concern after his diagnosis was the care of and well-being of Betty, his wife of 58 years, whom he had been enthusiastically and proudly caring for after her own cancer diagnosis a year earlier.

Bill was born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, where he met Betty, the love of his life, and together began their life of adventure outside of Pensacola. After graduating in 1962 with a degree in business from Bob Jones University, Bill traveled the eastern United States by car, with his wife and three young kids in tow, conducting audits for the General Accounting Office. In 1965, Bill and his family settled on the space coast of Florida, where Bill loved to boat and fish, coach his boys in baseball, do wood-working, and have fun with his family. He continued to work as an auditor and accountant, ending his career as the Chief Accountant for NASA. Bill greatly loved and was loved in return by the friends of all his children, who were like extra children to him. You know who you are.

After launching his three children out into the world, Bill and Betty relocated to Crestview, Florida, in 1996, to be closer to family. He and Betty lived in a 19-foot Airstream for two years, while he built their home. Cold, outdoor showers were no problem for him and he considered it an adventure! In 2016, Bill and Betty moved to St. Petersburg to be close to their youngest son, his wife, and their two young children.

Bill was quite the teacher. He taught honesty, gratitude, hard work, and fun. He was the best at teaching how to not sweat the small stuff. He taught how to tie and bait a hook. He taught how to swing a bat. He taught how to tow a car out of beach sand at night. He taught how to blindly search for tools in the deep, dark, brackish water of the canal, frequently dropped while repairing the boat engine. He taught how to shoot at water moccasins in the pool and how to lean a ladder against a small toe board on the roof while mounting a weather vane. If he didn’t know how to do it, he did it anyway and you did it with him.

Service to his church and community was integral to who he was. He volunteered frequently during disasters with the Red Cross or church and was always available with his time to those in need. He provided housing to those without homes and dinner to those without food. He could not have been a better example of how to live your life.

He is adored by those left behind, his wife, Betty; his three children, Bill, Jr., Linda Bailey and her husband Joe Brigham, and Bob Bailey and his wife Lydia Bailey; his six grandchildren, Christina, Angela, Zachary, Zoe (Zo-Bo to him), Bennett and little Evelyn. He loved those grandchildren with everything he had and they worshipped him. He is also survived by his close extended family, including his sisters, Mildred Mitchell, Doris Inge, Drucilla Belich and Glenda Crooke; his brother, J.C. Inman; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Edna, and his brother, Willard.

Visitation will be held 11:00am CST until a Funeral Service beginning at 12:00noon CST, Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd., Pensacola, FL, with Pastor George Katzman and Pastor Patrick Pfrimmer officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations to be made to Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation, for cancer research, at MBC-FOUND, 12092 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612; online at Moffit.org/Donate; or, by calling 800-456-3434, ext. 1403.
