Walter "Papa" Stanley, of 3282 Dubois Road, Ithaca, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at the age of 91.
Walt was born on April 17, 1918 in Woodhaven, New York to Walter W. Stanley, Sr. and Stella E. (Divine) Stanley. He grew up on Long Island, graduating in 1934 from Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn.
As a young man, Walt delivered packages for Western Union throughout New York City. In addition to package deliveries on his bicycle, Walt also managed to deliver eggs throughout the city, which were sent from their upstate farm by his sister via the train.
On February 22, 1940, Walt married the love of his life, Lavinia Jane Smith, at the Catskill Reformed Church. He immediately began working the farmland at Jane's homestead in Catskill.
Dairy farming became a passion as Walt was surrounded by nature and the animals living on the farm. He cared for the animals in the same manner that he approached people, with gentle hands and kindness. No stranger to hard work, while operating the farm Walt also worked at the local feed store.
After retiring from the day to day operation of the farm, Walt and his son Kenny operated W&K Trucking Company from 1962-1982. Walt served as Master of the Asbury Grange in Saugerties.
In 1990, Walt and Jane moved to Ithaca to be near their daughter, Rusty, and her family. His ingenuity and cleverness led way to his nickname, "Mr. Fixit." Seldom was there a time that he could not meet the challenge of repairing whatever crossed his workbench!
Walt loved and cherished his family unconditionally and was known as "Papa" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Walt is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jane Stanley; a daughter, Stella "Rusty" (Gary) Vincent of Ithaca, NY; four grandchildren, Kendall, Karin, Jessie, and Cody; five great-grandchildren, Kendall, Derek, Ethan, Tessa, and Jaden; and a brother, Charles Stanley of Athens, NY. He was preceded in death by a son, Walter Kendall "Kenny" Stanley, in 2003; a sister, Clara Sterritt; and a brother, John Stanley.
A Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Trumansburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Gottschalk-Fielding officiating.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the Hospicare nurses and to Dr. Robert Hesson for their compassionate assistance and guidance throughout Walt's illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who wish to make a contribution in memory of Walt to kindly consider Hospicare of Tompkins County, 172 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850 or the Trumansburg United Methodist Church, PO Box 628, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
