Ola is a son of Hakan "Hokan" Hanson and Karna "Karan" Jonsdotter. He immigrated to the United States with his family before his sixth birthday. His youngest brother, John Alfred, was born on the plains.

The family moved to southeastern Idaho. Ola married Caroline Hansen in Goshen, Bingham County, Idaho on January 30, 1889. They lived in Hyrum, Utah at first (Caroline was from Hyrum). Then they moved to Goshen, Idaho.

Ola and Caroline became parents to seven children: Leo Vernon, Sylvia, Oliver Eugene, Irven Olen, Eva Elaine, Wallace H, and Howard Donald.
