Major (ret.) Thomas Neal Stiver departed for his final permanent change of station on September 9, 2017. He was 69 years old. Born on September 24, 1947 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he was welcomed with loving arms by William and Ader Lina (aka "Jerry") Stiver. He was followed by brothers William and Stephen.
Tom, as he was known, enlisted in the US Air Force in 1965. He served in Thailand during the Vietnam War to support communications for the 4258th Strategic Wing, involved in heavy bombing missions over Vietnam.

Tom returned from overseas in January 1969 and married Judith (Meyerhoefer) Stiver on April 19, 1969. He attended Louisiana Tech University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1974. He was then accepted into Officer Training School. He later attended the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and earned a Master's of Science in Facilities Management in 1980. Tom's USAF career entailed assignments around the globe. He was a proud member of Prime Beef and his tours included Hickam AFB, Barksdale AFB, Ellsworth AFB, Ramstein AFB, Osan AFB, Wright Patterson AFB, and Tempelhof AFB.

Tom retired from the USAF in 1992 to pursue his next journey in life and transitioned into acting. He enjoyed many successes with commercials (Target, Lifetime Network, ALTEL) as well as television walk on appearances (Parenthood, Modern Family, The Neighbors, Wilfred) and a stint with Disney, Fox, and other entities for holiday cards. Tom's filmography was filled with different genres. He was especially proud of the time he spent on the set of the HBO series Deadwood as "The Prospector"). Whenever Tom had the opportunity to work as an extra, he did it, even if it wasn't a speaking role.

Tom was best known locally as Santa Claus and he genuinely enjoyed bringing holiday magic to the children in the Dayton area. He was a Town and Country shopping center Santa for many years and he also made private appearances for numerous families.

Tom's other interests included local theatre productions (there are too many to list), acting at Renaissance Faires, and attending the cinema to see both Hollywood blockbusters and stinkers.

Tom is preceded in death by his wife Judith, his daughter Jennifer, his brother Stephen, and his parents. He is survived by daughters Amy (Dennis) Hertog, Wendy Stiver, and son Thomas N. Stiver II, and his brother William (Julie) Stiver and grandchildren Alison, Madelyn, and Adam Hertog and Camryn Stiver. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends with whom he became acquainted with during his life's journey.

As a part of his final wishes, Tom will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery. Please join us for Major Stiver's final Hail and Farewell. Family will receive friends on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 5:30-7:30PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, South Chapel. 3940 Kettering Blvd, Kettering, OH 45439.
