Helen V. Coleman passed away on Sept. 29, 2017, at Life Care Center of Lewiston at age 92, from a rare form of cancer. She died just as she lived, facing every obstacle with a positive and hopeful attitude. She will long be remembered and cherished for finding only the good in every life experience, and embracing all who came before her with an open heart. Perhaps the greatest legacy one can leave is that only kind and gentle words are spoken in remembering you, and this is truly the case for Helen.

Helen was born on June 24, 1925, in Winchester, to Chub Ralstin and Marie Helen Ruddell Ralstin. She lived the majority of her life at Spalding, Lapwai and Culdesac, moving to Lewiston four years ago. She graduated from Lapwai High School in 1944 and married Robert D. Coleman on Nov. 28, 1945.

Her first job was as a switchboard operator in Lewiston. She worked for the Lapwai School District as a cook, janitor, bus driver and errand runner, and received a special award upon retirement for her many years of dedicated service.

She was a lifelong Presbyterian, and a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Following retirement she enjoyed line dancing and traveling, especially her trip to Hawaii. She was a master at crocheting, creating not only many heirloom pieces for her family and friends, but also crafting such an abundance of useful items that she sold them at local craft fairs. She loved living on Garden Gulch, where she found great pleasure in caring for her many farm animals and pets and tending her gardens. She took great pleasure in bringing family and friends together for holidays, and would take advantage of any event to schedule a gathering.

Survivors names omitted per findagrave policy.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, and step-mother Alma Mary Oertly Ralstin ; her husband, Bob; her beloved brother, Lewis; half-brothers Wilbur, David and Wesley; half-sisters Joy, Ervilla and Marianne; and her aunt, Ethel Barnes.

Helen will be honored with a memorial service at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at Mountain View Funeral Home, followed by a graveside inurnment, with a gathering to follow at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to may donate to a special scholarship fund in her name aimed at returning home economics classes to the Lapwai School District.
