He was born about 1836 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, likely in the area of Hustonville. He enlisted in Company E on September 8, 1864, at Camp Nelson, Kentucky.

He and other men from his unit were escorting a Union Army cattle drive when they were ambushed and massacred by Confederate guerrillas outside of Simpsonville, Kentucky.

He went directly from slavery to the war against slavery. Per his service records, he was owned by America Bailey at the time of his enlistment.
