Francis Leland Ricks, 84, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away May 6, 1999, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was born December 20, 1914, in Benson, Cache County, Utah to Joseph and Alice Ricks. He was one of nine children, eight boys and a girl.
Lee, as he was known, loved to travel and left his farm home at 21 to join the Navy. Although he was discharged before World War II began, he later served as ensign in the Merchant Marines in charge of the engine room. His ship was torpedoed.
He married Maude Ricks, and they were later divorced. He married Grethe Vohlert Nielsen May 23, 1952.
Lee and his family lived in California and Utah. He worked as an aircraft mechanic for 23 years at Hill Air Force Base and also worked for nine years at Dow Chemical and at Weinstock's for 10 years, along with other jobs. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and building things with his hands.
He is survived by wife, Grethe; his children, Alice, Dennis, Stephen and Evan Ricks; brothers Ivan, Gene and Charles Ricks; sister Ruth Siefert; and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at noon Monday, May 10, at the Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 South), where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment is in Holladay Memorial Park.
