John Henderson was born in Dunblane, Scotland. He was second oldest son of George Henderson and Jean Drummond. They were a family of masons. His younger brother Stephen Henderson had made his was to New Orleans in the 1790s and had made a fortune there. Upon his death in 1838, John inherited much of his fortune and moved to Glasgow where he was involved in many building adventures. Upon his death in 1840, he was buried in the Old Anderston Cemetery which no longer exists today. His grave was located where today one of the exit ramps from the M8 highway is located.
