The Whitaker Family history listed Ellen as Ellen Bowles. However every record that has been found lists the name as Bolles. All the birth and death dates match on the stone but I am still doing research to see why the name is different than all the records.
Ellen Whitaker Bolles is the oldest daughter of James & Jane (Fuller) Whitaker. She was born near Hopedale, Tazewell, Illinois.
Her father had four children from his first marriage to Jane Smith. Ellen was the oldest child from lhis second marriage to Jane (Fuller) McBroom Whitaker. There were five children in her father's second marriage. Her mother, Jane Fuller McBroom Whitaker Evans would marry for a third time and have three more children so Ellen had 13 siblings total.
Her family moved to Iowa sometime during the Civil War and built a log cabin in Mahaska County, Iowa. She grew up in that area. After her father's death, her mother, Jane married John Evans. They had three daughters.
Ellen was married in 1870 and lived in White Oak, Mahaska,Iowa. In the 1880 census, they are still farming in White Oak area of Mahaska County, Iowa.. She is living with her husband Byron and two children listed as Hattie and J. G. Bolles and Byron's mother Delcenia Bolles who was 70 at the time.
By 1900, Ellen and Byron are living in Howard,Missouri. In 1910, they are in Oakland, Jasper, Missouri.
