Author, Journalist. He published fourteen science fiction novels, and was a frequent collaborator with fellow science fiction author Larry Niven. He was also one of the first computer and technology journalists. After serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, he studied at the University of Washington, where he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology in 1955, a master’s degree in psychology in 1958 and a Ph.D in political science in 1964. He worked for the Boeing Aircraft Company in the 1950s and 1960s as an aerospace researcher and was briefly involved in politics as part of Sam Yorty's 1969 mayoral campaign in Los Angeles, California. In the mid-1960s he began his writing career, writing both science fiction and later a computer column for the magazine “Byte”. He was an early adopter of personal computing and one of the first bloggers, with his blog "Chaos Manor". His frequent collaborations with writer Larry Niven, particularly, "The Mote in God's Eye" and the 1986 “New York Times” best seller "Footfall", were popular in the genre. He was also known for his “CoDominium” future history series. He won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 1973 and was nominated for the Hugo Award on multiple occasions.
