He was born on July 13, 1950 in Ross County, Ohio, the son of Dwight and Betty (Hollar) Newland.
He was retired from Ferno-Washington of Wilmington after 30 plus years of service and then he worked for Greenfield Research and Bob & Carl’s of Greenfield. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War where he served two tours of duty, with the first tour on the USS Decatur DDG-31 and the second on the USS Basilone DD-824. He was a member of the VFW Post 4736 of Greenfield. He was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, and arrowhead hunting. He was a founding member of the Deer Park Bow Hunters Club and enjoyed sharing and educating his children and grandchildren on anything outdoors.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter of Greenfield; two grandsons; one sister of Chillicothe; two brothers both of Chillicothe; one sister-in-law of Bainbridge; four brothers-in-law; numerous, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends, Archie and Larry both of Greenfield.
He was preceded in death by one son, John Martin; parents, Dwight Newland and Betty (Hollar) Ely; grandparents, John and Hazel Hollar; sister-in-law, Patti Brooks.
Funeral service will be 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 27 at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield with Rev. Joe B. Stewart officiating. Cremation will follow.
Visitation will be from 3:00 PM Wednesday until time of the service at the funeral home with Veterans Appreciation Service to begin at 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the McClain Tiger Softball, c/o Merchants National Bank, 117 S. Washington Street, Greenfield, Ohio 45123.
