Julius Koethe was born in the village of Grossfurra in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen (Germany). His birth name was Ludwig Karl Julius Koethe. Grossfurra is located in the present day state of Thuringia in central Germany near the city of Sondershausen. He immigrated to the United States in 1855, settling first in Minnesota and later in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Washington, and Oregon.


During the Civil War, Julius Koethe served with Company E, 38th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. His brother Karl Friedrich "Charles" Koethe served in Co. L, 9th Illinois Cavalry Regiment.


In 1866 he married Agnes Rose Bader and they had eleven children together: Elisabeth, William, Amelia, Emma, Frederick, Samuel, Ernestine, Charles, Albert, Martha, and Lydia.


He was a resident of Portland, Oregon from 1910 until his death in 1913. He worked as a lumberman and a farmer for most of his adult life.
