Mr. Leslie William Powell Jr. of South Boston, VA passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017 at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in South Boston on December 23, 1928 and was 88 years old. He was the son of the late Leslie William Powell Sr. and Elsie P. Powell and was married for 62 years to Jaqueline Palmer Powell who survives. He was a second generation co-owner and co-manager of Powell Funeral Home. The funeral home was his passion and he served all who called upon his services with dignity and respect. He attended Lynchburg College and graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and taught the Slate Bible Class for many years. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion Post 8 and the VFW Post 8243. He was President of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association 1981-1982. He also was a member and former president of the Virginia State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers. He was a former member and president of the South Boston Lions Club and was also a member and former President of the South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History. He was a charter member and last living founding member of the Halifax County Rescue Squad. He was a consummate collector artifacts, most notably bibles, banjos, and Indian Relics.
