Cpl. Robert D Stratton. Bob was killed on this day, September 3 1864 by the Kirkland Bushwhackers. His partner Jack Roberts was mortally wounded but managed to crawl away into a brush pile and hide. He managed to make it home and according to his descendants he died on or near the front porch of his house.

For those of you who have been up on the Cherohala Skyway near the North Carolina line, you have no doubt heard of Stratton Bald, aka Bob Bald or Bob Stratton Bald. Bob Stratton lived up there in a roughly made cabin with his family. He had a small farm up there and raised some cattle as well.

Bob was in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He had came home from the war and had brought with him a Sharps repeating rifle, probably the first in this area.

The Kirkland Bushwhackers were roaming this area, stealing, killing and looting whatever they took a mind to get. They heard about Bob Stratton's new rifle. They decided they wanted it, no matter what they had to do.

On September 3 1864 Bob and Jack Roberts were coming down through the mountains between Ball Play and Rafter Tennessee looking for a stray cow. Bob was carrying the repeating rifle.

As they came down the old road, they spotted a piece of paper laying in the road. Bob got down off his horse (other accounts say they were on foot, so l ain't certain about this) but anyways, Bob knelt down to pick up the paper.

As he knelt down a volley of gunshots rang out, killing him instantly and badly wounding Jack Roberts, who managed to crawl into a brush pile. In his dying statement he said that he watched the Bushwhackers take Stratton's rifle and ride off. Jack Roberts died two days later.

Bob's wife Narcissus and his sister in law came to where Bob fell and dug a grave and buried him where he fell.
