Born Allan Gilchristson or Gilkerson, son of Allan Gilchristson and his second wife Anne Johnston, he followed the family profession of stone mason. The surname was abbreviated in Wiston c. 1800 for all local Gilchristsons/Gilkersons. He moved to Bute as a young man to build farms for the Bute estate, and on 12 November 1805 married Agnes 'Annie' Boyd, daughter of a builder and burgess of Rothesay, Robert Boyd. They had 10 children, the youngest being James Gilchrist, the violin-maker. He died following a stroke of apoplexy.
The full inscription, much weathered, lists the whole family, though most of the adult children have their own graves, some elsewhere. The plot belonged to his wife's parents originally.
