DUANVALE, Trelawny — Ninety-seven-year-old Harland Fairweather, also called Fairy, the eldest child of the world's oldest citizen, supercentenarian Violet Mosse Brown, passed away at his home yesterday morning.
Fairweather, according to a close family member, was hypertensive and died after a short bout of illness.
His mother, Mosse Brown, affectionately called Aunt V, was born on March 10, 1900.
On Saturday, when Fairweather celebrated his 97th birthday, his mother became the oldest person on Earth after the passing of the previous oldest, Italian Emma Morano, who was born on November 29, 1899.
Morano, who died at her home in Verbania, northern Italy, was the last survivor of the 19th century.A close family source told the Jamaica Observer that Mosse Brown, who now has four children alive, has taken the death of her son very hard. "They were very close and shared the same residence," the family source said.
"She is well aware of everything and she is grieving," said the source. "It is well known that she wanted him to bury her and occasionally stated that upon the passing of either one of them, the other would follow shortly afterwards," he said.
The supercentenarian was said to be getting a lot of support from family and community members during her time of grief.
Vernon Davis, Mosse Brown's grandson, said his uncle died peacefully yesterday morning after having breakfast. His two caregivers, he said, were at his bedside when he passed away.
"Right now I am at a loss of words because he was like a father to me," the distraught Davis said.
Davis said Fairweather was very elated over news that his mother became the oldest person on Earth on Saturday. "He was really overwhelmed with the achievement," Davis said.
Fairweather is survived by five children.

Harland Fairweather : He should have taken singles

Violet Brown, the world's oldest person, said on Saturday that had her son Harland Fairweather taken her advice, he would have made it to 100.
Fairweather, 97, died just four days after his birthday at his Duanvale, Trelawny, home on April 19.
His death came a mere days after Brown, 117, was declared the world's oldest person and he became the world's oldest son.
"I told him at 97 that he should move to the century in singles. He tried to hit a four, and see it there, him dead," Brown said, looking in the direction of Fairweather's coffin. Her remarks caused an outburst of laughter....
Brown turned up at the funeral held at the St Michael's Anglican Church in Clark's Town, Trelawny, in a limousine and was greeted with flashing bulbs from the cameras, including those of the media. As she entered the church, Brown paused by the coffin, took a look at her son's body, wiped tears from her eyes and then proceeded to her seat. Soon, her lips began to move as she read the funeral programme quietly.
Fairweather's younger brother, Barry Russell, in his tribute, remembered him as a kind and loving individual, who lived by the motto, 'Never look down on anyone unless you were going to pick him up.'
Lloyd Vermont, who gave the remembrance, said Fairweather was a master tailor and entrepreneur who took his skills to England, where he lived for over 39 years.
Persons in attendance included Trelawny Custos Paul Muschett, who represented Governor General Sir Patrick Allen; North Trelawny Member of Parliament Victor Wright; and Karen Kirlew, who is set to become the first female president of The Jamaica Baptist Union.
