Bertha "Bertie" Lenora Castilow Young went peacefully to her Eternal Home on the morning of February 18, 2022, exactly one month before her 95th birthday. She passed away not from the health hurdles she faced over the last few years – blood clots in her lungs, a widow maker heart attack, septic pneumonia, two rounds of COVID, a stroke, and a second heart attack – but simply from old age.

Bertie was born on March 18, 1927 in Mexia, TX to Walter Lee Castilow and Eunice Pearl Smith Castilow. She was the second youngest of nine siblings and talked about how much she loved when her mother would gather all nine of them around the wood burning stove and read them the Bible. Though her family was not monetarily wealthy, Bertie always said that she and her siblings had a good life growing up.

When Bertie was nineteen she attended a dance with a friend. At the dance, a young man started spitting spit balls at her. He eventually asked Bertie to dance and she learned his name was Herbert. Over time he won her over, and on October 27, 1946, Bertie married Herbert L. Young Sr. When they were first married, they lived in Speegleville, Texas and then Waco, Texas. They had two sons: Ronald Earl ("Ronny") and Herbert Lawrence Jr. ("Larry"). Herbert and Bertie owned a construction company, H&L Construction, based out of Waco. In 1965, they worked on the Townshire parking lot in Bryan, and in 1966, they moved their family and construction endeavors to Bryan, renaming their business Young and Sons. Bertie always kept the books for the family business.

Bertie and Herbert adored each other and worked hard to make one another happy. Once, when Bertie expressed her desire for a swimming pool, she arrived home after a short trip to find Herbert had a piece of equipment in the back yard and had already dug a hole for the pool. Bertie remained devoted to Herbert until the end of his life; when he was very ill, she was constantly by his side, faithfully caring for him until his passing. Bertie was a true example of loving in sickness and in health.

The morning after Herbert and Bertie were married, she cooked him fried spam for breakfast. He was a little nervous about whether or not his new bride knew how to cook, yet he need not have worried; this first meal was no indication of Bertie's cooking abilities. She would ultimately become the most amazing cook, always treating her grandchildren to whatever they requested. On Saturday mornings, she prepared amazing poolside breakfast buffets which usually consisted of "Granny eggs" (fried eggs), toast, bacon, biscuits and gravy that beat any you've ever had, and both skim milk and orange juice to top it off. All of her grandkids especially enjoyed her Thanksgiving dressing, for which she didn't use a recipe but simply "threw together" a perfect combination of ingredients that was delicious every time. Bertie continued to cook for her grandkids even after they were married and had children of their own. Many times, Bertie would invite them over during their lunch breaks and cook them practically a nine-course meal...NEVER forgetting the dessert! Hello Dolly!

Bertie and Herbert's house was always full of kids and grandkids – all were welcome to come over to enjoy that swimming pool and Bertie's cooking. Grandkids even hosted pool parties at Bertie's house and she welcomed everyone with open arms.

Bertie was such a classy lady. Most who met and knew her remembered how she presented herself and always appeared so put together – she loved a pantsuit with coordinating shoes, bag, jewelry, and – of course – makeup. Even during her last hospital stay less than a month ago, when she changed into her own clothes, she asked if there was any makeup for her to put on.

You never had to guess what Bertie was thinking, as she was sure to let you know. She truly kept us on our toes and entertained at all times. She was a fan of playing bridge and was for about 40 years a member of a weekly group. She also enjoyed swimming, adorning her pool with plants, cooking, spending time with family, vodka tonics, hot toddys, and Bloody Marys. But most of all, she loved her family deeply and adored being surrounded by them. She outlived her husband, her lifelong friends, all of her siblings, and all of the friends she made in her time living at Waldenbrooke. (We honestly thought she would outlive us all!) She leaves a large hole in all of our hearts and will be greatly missed.

Bertie is preceded in death by her parents Eunice Pearl Smith Castilow and Walter Lee Castilow; her husband of 57 years, Herbert Young Sr.; her granddaughter Katie Young; her great granddaughter Kameryn Young; and eight siblings.

Bertie left behind a legacy of loved ones who cherish her memory: her sons and daughters-in-law, Ronny and Phyllis Young and Larry and Beverly Young; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Blumberg and husband Greg, Lindy Beasley and husband Chris, Ashley Crawford and husband Jason, Crystal Schinzler and husband Mark, and Matt Young and wife Brooke; her eleven great grandchildren, Weston, Kyle, Wyatt, Ryan, Deliah, Damaris, Denton, Kristine, Will, and Chase; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless special family members and friends.

Bertie's family would like to thank the amazing staff at Legacy Nursing and Rehab for the way they genuinely loved her and for their unwavering care for her until the very end.

Visitation will be Friday February 25th from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan with a Rosary being recited at 6:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday February 26th at 10:30am at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
